Carol Sergeant CBE becomes Chairman of Standards Policy and Strategy Committee

Non-executive role of BSI advisory committee

Carol Sergeant CBE has joined BSI, the UK National Standards Body, in a non-executive role as Chairman of the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee (SPSC).  The principal objective of the SPSC is to bring together the views of those with an interest in British Standards and standardization activities in order to develop the strategic policy of the organization in the national, European and international standards arenas. 

Sir David Brown, Chairman of BSI said: “The Board is delighted that Carol Sergeant has agreed to chair the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee.  Her distinguished career and expertise across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors have given her a deep understanding of the vital role of standards in every walk of life.  Under her leadership the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee will go from strength to strength.”

In her role as Chairman, Carol is responsible for leading the committee that gathers and distils the views of those with an interest in British Standards and advises the board on strategic and policy matters relating to standards.

Carol Sergeant comments: “I am a firm believer in the benefits standards bring to individual organizations and the wider economy – the impact they have on innovation, access to international markets and consumer confidence - I am delighted to have taken up the role of Chairman of the Standards Policy and Strategy Committee.”

Carol has succeeded Mike Nichols, who has stepped down on health grounds and BSI is very grateful for his years of service on this committee.

Carol Sergeant Biography

Carol Sergeant has held a range of senior positions in both the public and private sector, including as Head of Major Banks’ Supervision at the Bank of England, Managing Director at the Financial Services Authority and Chief Risk Officer at Lloyds Banking Group. More recently she lead the HM Treasury sponsored project on “Simple Financial Products”, with the final report published in March 2013.

Carol currently is a non-executive director at Danske Bank, Secure Trust Bank and Martin Currie Holdings, and Chairman of the UK whistle blowing charity, Public Concern at Work. She was appointed CBE in 2004.
